A forthcoming book chapter in the Routledge Handbook of Developments in Digital Journalism Studies, written together with Neil Thurman, Robert G. Picard and Arne H. Krumsvik, argues that newspapers’ online experiments have not reversed their falling fortunes.
We believe that while news publishers report strong increases in their digital revenues, one needs to “be careful how we interpret such claims and skeptical about the ability of ‘digital-first’ strategies to transform the fortunes of struggling news outlets.”
The chapter points out that increases in news publishers’ digital revenues must be seen in the context of their total revenue.
